"Yvonne Emmerson-Peirce challenges Robert Key head to
head"
Yvonne Emmerson-Peirce today (17 May 2001) hand delivered a
letter to Robert Key demanding that in open debate he defends and
accounts for his 18 years as an MP for Salisbury. She says:
"People of all political persuasions are telling me that
they are more than disappointed with the performance of the Conservative
candidate.
They tell me that after 18 years he has failed to deliver or
even secure a plan for an adequate transport solution for Salisbury
even though he was a Roads Minister in Mrs Thatchers time. He is
still promoting the Salisbury by-pass that his own government cancelled
before the last General Election. They want action now, I will fight
for an inclusive solution that includes for instance the Wylye Valley
in which I lived and for whose residents I have great sympathy.
People are also concerned that the Conservative having been
one of the Opposition Defence Spokesmen but having lost his position
on the Defence Select Committee admitted to having been "misled"
as to the future of Boscombe Down.
His inactivity and ineffectiveness as a Government Minister
and recently as an opposition MP demands explanation. His recent
public meeting on foot and mouth and his understanding of the needs
of the local farmers has been adequately dealt with in the local
press.
He (Key) epitomises the decline of the Conservative Party. I
can and will do better."
Yvonne is prepared for an open debate with the
Conservative Candidate to explain her policies and vision for the
future of Salisbury Constituency. A venue, date and time will be
announced if Key accepts the challenge.
